"Luana" to Bring Severe Wind and Rain to Western Australia
Tropical Cyclone "Luana," classified as a Category 1 system, formed over the northwestern waters of Australia on the night of January 23 (Beijing time) (Figure 1). It is expected to move southeastward and make landfall near the coast of the Dampier Peninsula in northwestern Australia around 14:00 on January 24 (Beijing time). After landfall, Luana will continue its southeastward trajectory, moving further inland.
Affected by this system, over the next five days, central and eastern Western Australia will experience heavy to torrential rain, with some areas facing extreme downpours. The cumulative precipitation in these regions is expected to range from 40 to 90 millimeters, with some areas receiving 120 to 220 millimeters, and locally exceeding 250 millimeters (Figure 2). The northern coastal areas of Western Australia will see winds of 9 to 10 on the Beaufort scale, with gusts reaching 11 to 13 (Figure 3). Attention should be given to the potential secondary disasters caused by the heavy rainfall, such as flash floods and urban waterlogging, as well as the adverse impacts on transportation and other industries.
Additionally, the heavy rainfall has alleviated the extreme heat in western Australia. However, over the next five days, most of central and eastern Australia will continue to experience high temperatures ranging from 35 to 40°C, with localized areas expected to see maximum temperatures exceeding 42°C (Figure 4).
